Winter Car Seat Safety

The time has come or is slowly approaching that we must bundle up our children to face the cold outside.

While it’s important to keep our children wrapped up and warm to bear the cold, it’s very important to properly keep them secure in their car seats.

Bulky coats are not safe to wear while buckled in a car seat.

The reason why bulky coats are not safe is due to the fact that it prevents the harness from properly fitting. The harness becomes to loose and can prevent from protecting our children properly during a crash and can even lead to ejection.

To test to see if a winter coat is not safe to be worn, please do the following:

  1. Place child in car seat while wearing the coat. Adjust the harness until you can no longer pinch the material.
  2. Remove the child from the car seat and do not readjust the harness.
  3. Place the child back into the car seat without the jacket and buckle the harness.
  4. If you can pinch the harness material and/or lift the harness with space between the harness and child (as seen in the image below) then the coat is too bulky.

Here are some tips to keep those little ones warm while fasten to a car seat:

  1. After placing child in car seat and buckling, turn the coat backwards and slip their arms through the sleeves of the coat
  2. Lay a warm blanket or fleece over the child
  3. Pre-heat the vehicle before buckling child in car seat

  1. What an important message. Thank you for sharing. I have always had my kids in the car with bulky coats on. Will have to try your ideas. I will recently be sharing this 🙂

You are most welcome! I didn't know this with my first son and the thought never crossed my mind that it wasn't safe until I read an article online.

These are very important tips that parents need to know! When our boys were younger, we never put their bulky winter coat on them in the car seat. We would just dress them in a warm shirt and pants and put a blanket over top of them and they were plenty warm.
